We’re proud to share in the careers of so many incredible healthcare professionals who are not only experts in their field but also dedicated to the health and vitality of their community.
Meet Rupal Udeshi, MD, Director of Pediatrics for Sound Physicians’ site at Frederick Health Hospital in Frederick, Maryland. As the leader of one of Sound’s only pediatric-focused programs, Dr. Udeshi is an amazing example of the tenderness and expertise needed to care for younger patients and their families.
What led you into a leadership role, and how did Sound support that growth?
I was offered the opportunity to lead my team and the brand-new pediatric department we opened in August 2022. I was excited to have the opportunity to be part of an organization with a national footprint and the many resources that came with that support.
It was quite a transition. In a few months, I learned a whole new vocabulary! The Sound credentialing and recruiting teams helped me find excellent clinicians for my team. Along the way, I had mentors and support from both our regional and executive emergency medicine leadership teams.
Resources such as consistent, structured leadership courses and monthly huddles with our Sound Emergency Medicine CEO, Dr. Tony Briningstool, have offered so much guidance. I have also enjoyed attending Sound’s annual Medical Director Summit and serving on my hospital’s continuing medical education (CME) committee. Networking with people from different regions, medical specialties, and even departments in my hospital who share many of the same goals and leadership experiences is inspiring.
What does clinical and career development look like for clinicians at your hospital?
I encourage everyone on my team to find and focus on something they feel passionate about throughout their personal career development. Some people enjoy teaching medical students while others enjoy creating and implementing evidence-based guidelines for different medical conditions. One of my colleagues is very creative and artistic and likes to take the lead on creating gifts for Nurse’s Week. I emphasize that everyone should use their own specific skill set to help the team.
What do you look for in clinicians when building an effective emergency medicine team?
First and foremost, I am looking for dedicated pediatric clinicians who are willing to help and truly be part of a team. People who truly love working with children and their families and enjoy what they do. Finding joy in medicine helps prevent burnout and keeps us on the path to providing great care.
What aspects of your personality or upbringing come in handy when leading a team in the hospital?
I was raised in a family where we valued service to others, our community, and the less fortunate. As the first person in my family to become a doctor, I feel very fortunate to be able to do this job.
What are some of your favorite things about Frederick, Maryland, and the surrounding area?
Frederick has the best downtown area with great restaurants and is a fun area to spend time with friends and family. I especially love the city’s decorations along the Carroll Creek during the Christmas holiday. However, my favorite part of Frederick is the people who call it home. Frederick’s community members and families are kind, caring, and want the best for their children.
What is something you are passionate about outside of the hospital?
I love traveling. I took a trip earlier this year that brought me to my sixth continent—one day I’ll make it to Antarctica! I also love my Philadelphia Eagles football team (Go Birds!).
How do you encourage your team (and yourself!) to prioritize well-being?
My team and I make a point to share and celebrate each other’s achievements and family victories. I also make intentional shift scheduling a priority to help people have their ideal work-life balance.
