Emil Engels, MD, MBA
Chief Physician Officer
Dr. Emil Engels serves as Sound’s Chief Physician Officer for Anesthesia, overseeing physician leadership, clinical quality, and operational performance across the specialty. In his role, he’s focused on ensuring an excellent patient care experience along with a consistently strong surgeon experience through Sound Anesthesia’s collaborative, team-based model. A physician executive with more than 25 years of experience, Dr. Engels has spent his career leading large-scale clinical and business operations and leveraging his clinical and financial background to optimize anesthesia and surgical care at facilities of every size.
Prior to joining Sound, Dr. Engels served as CEO of Aligned Orthopedic Partners, where he achieved a 400% growth in providers, revenue, and EBITDA during his tenure as well as championed extensive value-based care initiatives alongside the surgeons.
Prior to his role with Aligned Orthopedic Partners, Dr. Engels served as Market President for Mednax, overseeing 12 anesthesia practices across four states, with 800 providers and $260M in net patient service revenue.
Dr. Engels earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine, and completed his residency and cardiac anesthesia fellowship within the Harvard University system. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Tennessee.
